Everyone Who Said They Would Stay

The drawer by the kettle sticks. Douglas has never planed the runner down, and if you asked him why he would tell you it is on the list. It is not on the list. Fixing it would mean opening it more often.

Four things live in there.

A spare key on a red plastic fob. That was Marek, who rented the back bedroom for two years and said, on a Sunday afternoon with his hand flat on the table, that Douglas was the nearest thing to a brother he had ever had. Marek took a job in Rotterdam in the March. The messages went from every day, to Sundays, to a photograph of a canal at Christmas, to nothing at all.

A mug with a heron on it, chipped at the handle. That was his aunt Rosalind, who moved into the apartment over the drugstore to be near him the year his mother died, and who told him at the funeral, holding both his hands in both of hers, that he would never be on his own again while she had breath in her. She had eleven more years of breath. She spent nine of them in Perth, near her daughter, which was fair, and Douglas has never once said otherwise.

A phone charger with a strip of masking tape wrapped around the plug. That was Callum from the depot. Six years of Friday afternoons, best man at the wedding, and then a silence after the divorce that started because he did not know what to say and hardened because it had gone on too long to say anything.

And a library card in a name that is not his. That one he does not talk about.

Douglas is fifty one. He has a decent job, a decent kitchen, and a skill he never asked to develop. He can tell, roughly, how long someone has left. Not their life. Their stay. He meets somebody warm and open and generous, and somewhere behind his eyes a small clock starts, and the clock is usually right, and being right about it is the loneliest feeling he knows.

Here is the part nobody sees. Douglas prays. Mostly on the drive home, mostly at the lights on Preston Road. And he prays the way you talk to a person who is standing by the door with their coat already on. Polite. Brief. Grateful in advance for the time given. He does not ask for much, because you do not unpack in front of a guest.

He would never say out loud that he expects God to drift eventually. He has never once let the sentence finish itself. But that drawer taught him something about how love ends, and for about thirty years now he has been quietly applying the lesson upward.

Somebody was going to have to sign it

There is a scene in Genesis that most people skip, because it opens with animals and a knife and it does not look like it is about you.

Abram asks God how he can know. God tells him to bring a heifer, a goat, a ram, a dove and a young pigeon. Abram cuts the animals through the middle and lays the halves facing each other on the ground, with a path down the center. Then he waits all afternoon in the heat, driving the birds of prey off the carcasses, which is the most human detail in the chapter.

He is waiting for the ceremony. Everybody in that part of the world knew the ceremony. When two parties made a binding agreement they walked together down that path between the pieces, and the walk said one thing: let what happened to these animals happen to me, if I fail to keep my word. Both parties walked. Both signed in the same ink.

The sun goes down. A deep sleep falls on Abram, and a horror of great darkness, and while he is lying there in the dust a smoking furnace and a burning lamp move down the path between the pieces. God walked it. Abram slept through his own covenant ceremony.

Hear that, because it is the ground under your feet and it is not mine to soften. You were not awake for the signing. Genesis 15:17 puts the fire between the pieces while Abram is flat on his back, and the same Spirit who pressed that detail into the record is pressing it into you now: the agreement that holds you was never co-signed by you, and it was never going to be.

Which changes what a bad week means. If a covenant rests on two signatures, then every failure of yours is a crack in the foundation, and you live the way Douglas prays, braced for the drift. If only one party walked the path, the covenant stands where He stands, on the days you feel it and on the days you feel nothing at all.

Now listen to how the old book says it. The sentence everybody quotes is Deuteronomy 7:9, and almost nobody reads the sentence in front of it, where God says He brought them out because He loved them, and because He would keep the oath He had sworn to their fathers. The love came first. Then the oath. Then, and only then, this:

Know therefore that the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generationsDeuteronomy 7:9

Do the arithmetic on a thousand generations. It comes to something like twenty thousand years. Nobody has a thousand generations. No family line on earth has ever been asked to produce one. That number is not a measurement of the people. It is a measurement of Him, and it was spoken over a nation that had just watched itself fail in a desert, with the dust still on its sandals.

And you have a place inside that arithmetic already. His word said a thousand generations out loud, in front of the worst possible audience, and His Spirit has never withdrawn the sentence or added a footnote to it. It is already settled.

Then there is the strangest verse in Hebrews. God swore an oath, it says, and He swore it by Himself, because He could swear by no one greater. Think about what an oath is for. An oath exists because people lie. God cannot lie, so an oath adds nothing whatever to His truthfulness. He gave one anyway, for the sake of people whose entire experience of being promised something is a drawer by the kettle.

You are not being asked to carry this. Hebrews 6:18 calls it two unchangeable things, and the Holy Spirit did not put that phrase there as decoration: the strong consolation in that verse is yours, in your hands, today, and the holding is His work and always was.

And the family He was building was promised before there was anybody in it. Scripture says He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world and marked us out beforehand for adoption. Not recruited after a vacancy opened. Not squeezed into a household that was already full and might one day run short of room. You were named in that house before the house had a single person standing in it. He said it once, in writing, and His Spirit has never stopped saying it, which is why a sentence that old lands on an ordinary Tuesday as though somebody said it this morning.
