House Rules Of A Family You Are In

The bag lives under the bed, on the left, where the slats are.

Inside it: two folded t-shirts, a flashlight, a photograph in a sandwich bag, a toothbrush still sealed in its packet, and a gas station receipt for four dollars and ten cents that Tomas cannot explain to himself and has never once thrown away. On the first of every month he takes it all out, checks it, and packs it again in the same order.

He is eleven. He has been in this house for two years and three months, and his name went on the same paper as everybody else's last April, and there was a cake with his name on it and his grandmother came from four hours away.

You would like him. Everybody likes him. That is sort of the problem.

Tomas lines his shoes up at the door with the toes touching the baseboard. Tomas takes his plate to the sink before anyone has finished eating. Tomas says thank you for having me at the end of dinner, and Nadia stopped correcting that around Christmas because correcting it only ever made his ears go red and made him say it again the following night, quieter.

There is a chart on the fridge under a magnet shaped like a lemon. Nadia made it for all four of them in about nine minutes with a ruler and a marker, and it is a perfectly ordinary chart. Bins on Tuesday. Somebody feed the dog. Do not leave the wet towels on the floor, which is aimed squarely at Katya and everybody knows it.

His brothers and sisters treat that chart the way children treat weather. They ignore it, they get shouted at cheerfully, they do it eventually, and none of them has ever looked at it twice.

Tomas has never missed a square. Not one, in two years. He gets up early on Tuesdays.

The blackcurrant happens on a Saturday in June. He is carrying the full jug from the kitchen to the front room, both hands, careful the way he is careful about everything, and his foot catches the rucked corner of the rug by the doorway, and the whole jug goes out in front of him across the pale carpet in a shape like a country.

Nobody says a word. The television is still going.

Tomas does not cry. He turns around and goes upstairs, and there is the sound of the bed being moved out from the wall, and he comes back down with the bag in both arms and stands by the front door with his shoes already on.

And Nadia comes out of the kitchen with a bowl of warm water and a cloth, and she does not look at the bag at all. She kneels down on the carpet next to the stain, in her good skirt, and she says: come here, this is a two person job, I need somebody to hold the bowl.

He stands there. He asks it in a voice with nothing in it. Are you sending me back.

And she says: your name is on the same paper as mine. Come and hold the bowl.

Whose house it is changes what the list means

Here is a question that decides everything, and almost nobody asks it out loud: when you read God's instruction, who do you picture holding it?

If it is an examiner, then every line is a place you can lose points, and reading is a nervous activity, and the best possible outcome of any given day is that nothing was deducted. If it is a Father, and the house is already home, the same lines are the way a family lives, and reading is something else entirely.

Same words on the page. Completely different room.

To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through ChristGalatians 4:5-7

Look at the order in those three verses, because the order is the whole message. Redeemed. Then adopted. Then the Spirit of His Son sent into the heart. Then the cry. The cry comes last and it comes out of a person who is already in the family, and nowhere in that sequence does anybody audition.

You are a son in that house, not a guest with good manners. Galatians 4:6 says God sent the Spirit of His Son into your heart, and that word Father you find yourself using is not something you talked yourself into; it is His Spirit doing what He was sent to do.

And this is not a New Testament innovation dropped on top of an older, colder arrangement. It was always this way round. There is a lovely passage in Deuteronomy where Moses tells parents what to say when a child eventually asks what all this means, and the striking thing is that the answer he gives them is not a definition. It is a story. When your son asks you in time to come, you shall say: we were slaves, and the Lord brought us out with a mighty hand.

The child asks what the instruction is, and the father answers with the rescue. That is the catechism. Out first, taught after, and the teaching only makes sense in the light of the getting out.

You were brought out before you were ever taught anything. Deuteronomy 6:21 makes a rescue the first thing a child hears, and the same Spirit who put that answer in a father's mouth in the desert is putting it in your chest right now. That order has never once been reversed for anybody.

Now, there is an argument people have about which of the commands, statutes and judgments fall on believers today, and in what form, and it has been going on for a very long time. It is not this page's business and I am not going to pretend otherwise or sneak a verdict in at the end. You cannot fail this article. What I want you to see is not which squares are on the chart. It is who wrote the chart, and where you were standing when it went up on the fridge.

Because there is real content in there, and it is not thin. Commands about how to treat a person who works for you. Statutes about what you do with a lost animal that is not yours. Judgments about the gleanings at the edge of a field, left standing on purpose so that somebody with nothing could eat with their own hands and keep their dignity. That is not a scorecard. That is a description of a household where nobody has to be afraid, written by Someone who was building one.

You have not been handed a test. What is written was handed to a people who were already His, and His Spirit did not go quiet on that when the century changed.

And you know what happens to a person who reads the list as an examiner's list. They get very good and they get very tired. Tomas has never missed a square in two years, and he has a bag under his bed, and both of those facts have the same root.
