Paid At The Counter Before You Got There

The first Saturday of the month, ten past nine, and the envelope goes down on the counter the way it has gone down for eleven years.

Forty dollars. Two twenties folded once, in a plain white envelope with nothing written on it. She never waits for a receipt. She says good morning to whoever is on the register, sets it beside the tape dispenser, and goes back out to the truck.

The account is her husband's. He was building a barn the summer he died, and the lumber and the hangers and the roofing screws all went on the yard's house account, and the barn is still out there with two walls and no roof, and the balance was eleven hundred and something.

She has never once asked what was left on it. Asking felt like complaining.

Then a Saturday in November. New girl on the register, three weeks in, and the girl says, "I'm sorry, I can't find an account under that name."

"It's in the old book," the woman says. "The green one."

The girl goes in the back and comes out carrying a ledger the size of a paving slab, and the owner's son comes out behind her wiping his hands on a rag, and he is not smiling.

He sets the ledger on the counter and turns it around so she can read it.

The page is her husband's. Dates down the left in his own handwriting for the loads he signed for. June. June. July. And then, corner to corner across the whole page, one ruled diagonal line in black ink, and in the margin, in a different hand, a date.

March. Eight months after the funeral. Three years before her first envelope.

"Paid," the son says. "In full."

She reads it twice. "By who?"

He puts a finger on two initials in the corner. She knows those initials. They were painted on the door of every truck that ever came out to the farm, and they belonged to the man who owned the yard, and the man who owned the yard was the man who was owed.

He paid it himself. Then he never mentioned it to anybody, and then he died, and nobody thought to look in the green book.

Then the son does the thing she tells people about afterward. He goes to the desk behind him, pulls out the bottom drawer, carries it over, and sets it on the counter in front of her.

It is full of envelopes. Plain, white, unopened, banded together in bundles of twelve.

"I kept meaning to find the words," he says.

She stands there at ten past nine on a Saturday in November with one hand flat on the drawer, and she does not know what to do with her face.

The news came first, and the terms came from somewhere else

Nobody ever told her.

That is the whole tragedy of the green book, and it is not really about money. Eleven years of Saturdays, forty dollars at a time, on an account that was closed with one ruled line before she ever walked in. Not one of those payments was wrong. Every one of them was unnecessary, and the difference between wrong and unnecessary is the difference between guilt and grief.

Somebody handed you a version of Christianity that came with a payment plan. Maybe it was handed on with real love by people who were carrying it that way themselves. However it reached you, what you received was the terms, and underneath the terms there was an announcement, and the announcement is what is written here.

Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross.Colossians 2:14

Handwriting. Not an idea, not a mood. A page with a hand on it.

You have been carrying an envelope toward a page that has a line through it. The word for what happened to that page in Colossians 2 is blotting out. It is His Spirit pressing that word in, not my saying it, because the last thing a tired person needs is another instruction.

Now the announcement itself. It has four parts, and not one of them happened with you in the room.

The first part is a lamb, and a doorway, and a night in Egypt. In Exodus 12 a lamb without blemish is taken for each household, and the blood is put on the two side posts and on the upper doorpost, and the people inside eat standing up with their coats on, and the destroyer passes over that house, and by morning a nation that had earned nothing at all is walking out of a country it could never have left. That is where the announcement begins, and it begins with a household that was saved by a lamb it did not raise.

The second part is the offering. All through Leviticus the one who brought an animal laid a hand on its head before it died, and the life went in his place, and he walked home carrying nothing. Isaiah wrote centuries later that He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. And when a man in a river pointed at Jesus walking past and said, Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world, both pictures shut on the same person at once. Hebrews 9 says He appeared once in the end of the world to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Once. Not monthly.

The third part is a stone that got moved. The tomb in Matthew 28 was not opened to let Him out. He was already gone. It was opened so that people could put their heads in and look at the shelf where He had been and see the linen lying there by itself. The empty tomb is the receipt. It is God making the transaction public, on purpose, in daylight, in front of witnesses who then would not stop talking about it.

And the fourth part is the one that most people never get told at all. The empty tomb is the Father's verdict on His Son.

At the Jordan a voice out of heaven had already said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. On the third day the Father said the same thing again, in public, in an act instead of a sentence: Romans 1 says He was declared to be the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead, and Romans 4 says He was delivered for our offenses and raised again for our justification. The Son went into the ground carrying the handwriting that was against us. The Father raised Him without it. That is a verdict, and it has been entered, and it is not under appeal.

Here is the part they left out of the terms. That verdict is now the verdict spoken over you. You are not waiting on a ruling in your case, because His word says you were raised together with Him, and it is the Spirit of that same Father who now says the word Son over you in a voice you did not have to earn.

So put the envelope down.

Not because your years of Saturdays were shameful. They were faithful and they were unnecessary, and the man behind the counter has been trying to find the words. Nothing in the announcement asks you to bring anything. It asks you to be told.
