The InstructionPsalm 119:32

You Read It As A Test

This message is for the reflex that turns any page of instruction into a score you are currently losing

Twenty to six in the morning, one light on over the sink, and Hollis reading three chapters standing up at the counter because sitting down makes him sleepy.

He has done this most mornings for twenty years. Coffee in the green mug. The house quiet above him. He is a framer by trade and his hands are cracked at the knuckles in winter, and he holds a book the way a man holds a book he respects, flat, spine supported.

And by somewhere in the third chapter his stomach is tight.

Every time. Not dramatic, not a crisis, just that low pull under the ribs a person can carry for two decades without ever naming it. He reads a line about how a man ought to speak to his wife, and the tightening. He reads a line about generosity, and the tightening. He reads a psalm about a blessed man and he does the arithmetic on himself before he has finished the verse.

He would tell you he loves the Bible, and he does love it, and both of those things are true at once.

Here is where it came from, and he has never once made the connection.

When he was nine the report cards came home twice a year in a manila envelope with a metal clasp, and his father read them at a counter very like that one, standing up, with a pencil. Not out loud. He would go down the sheet and put a small mark beside some of the lines, and then he would put the pencil down and say, right, and put the kettle on.

His father was not cruel about it. That is the part people expect and it is not what happened. He was a decent quiet man who worked nights and did not have many words. But a nine-year-old standing in a doorway watching a pencil go down a page learns something on that morning, and what Hollis learned is that instruction is a thing that gets marked, and that the marking happens in silence, and that you find out how you did by watching somebody's face.

So he grew up. He got saved at twenty-three, properly and gladly, in a room over a hardware shop with the heater roaring. He started reading. And every morning since, without meaning to and without ever noticing he was doing it, he has opened that book and handed it a pencil.

Twenty years of reading a letter as a paper being marked.

He has never once heard the voice on the page as anybody's father. He has heard it as an examiner, kind but exacting, and he has been three chapters behind since he started.

If your stomach does that too, come and stand at the counter with me. I want to show you what is actually written above the instruction, and who is holding the pen.

You Read It As A Test

Nobody was ever marking your copy

Start with the word, because the word itself has been mistranslated in most people's chests even when their Bible got it right.

The word our English versions usually print as law is, in the Hebrew, the ordinary word for teaching. It comes from a root about pointing and showing, the sort of thing a parent does with a child and a set of hands. It is what a man does when he takes a boy out to the shop and puts his hands over the boy's hands on the plane. That is the shape of the word. Not a statute book. A father showing.

And then look at where God puts it in the story, because the order is the whole argument.

In Deuteronomy, Moses tells the people what to do when a son asks what all this instruction actually means. He gives them the answer word for word, and watch how it starts.

Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand.Deuteronomy 6:21

The child asks about the instruction and the father answers with a rescue.

He does not begin with the standard. He begins with the door of a house they could not leave and a hand that opened it, and only after that does anything else come. The instruction is never the way into the family in that book. It is what the family talks about at the table once everybody is out. You were brought out before you were ever taught one thing, and Deuteronomy 6:21 has the rescue in the first clause and the teaching in the ones after, and it is the Holy Spirit who gets that order straight in a man who has had it backward for twenty years.

Now the verse I want to leave with you, because it takes the strain out of the whole business.

I will run the way of thy commandments, when thou shalt enlarge my heart.Psalm 119:32

Read the order in that sentence too. He does not say, I will run and eventually my heart will be enlarged by all the running. He says the enlarging happens and then the running happens, and the enlarging is God's verb. A wide heart runs. A narrow one trudges and checks the distance. And the man who wrote that line was not being scored on his lap time. It is already yours as a gift and not as a result, because Psalm 119:32 puts God's enlarging first in the sentence and the Holy Spirit is the one who widens a man from the inside while he is standing at a counter at twenty to six.

And notice what happens to the vocabulary all through that psalm. Sweeter than honey. My delight. My song in the house of my pilgrimage. Nobody has ever described an examination that way. That is a man talking about something he loves, and delight is not what any of us produce by trying harder to feel it.

Now let me say something plainly, and then let it go.

There is an old argument about which of these commands and statutes belong on a believer today and which do not, and people who love God with everything they have land in different places on it, and I am not going to referee it here. That argument is not what this page is for. What I will say is this: a reader cannot fail this page, and the tightening under your ribs has never once been the Holy Spirit doing His job. He convicts, and conviction is specific and it is warm and it comes with a way out. What Hollis has every morning is not conviction. It is a pencil going down a sheet.

Because here is who is actually reading over your shoulder.

And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.Galatians 4:6

Read the direction that cry is running. It is not you calling up. It is God's own Spirit, inside you, calling God Father from within your chest, which means the sonship was settled before you opened the book this morning. You have the Spirit of the Son in you and Galatians 4:6 says God sent Him there Himself, and the crying in you is His work, not a mood you have to get up.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is a change of reader, not a change of effort.

You are not required to try harder at the reading. That would be a new requirement and a heavier one, and it is not what is being handed to you. What is being handed to you is the identity of the voice on the page, which Galatians 4:6 settles by putting the Spirit of the Son inside you, and the Holy Spirit changes the sound of every sentence in this book without one word of it moving.

The same line about how a man speaks to his wife, read as a mark against you, is a knot under the ribs. Read as a father in the doorway saying here is how it works, son, it is the same sentence and it is not a knot at all.

And no page of it can put you outside, because you were never let in on the strength of your reading. You were brought out first, and Deuteronomy 6:21 begins the whole answer with the rescue rather than the rule, and the Spirit of the Son in you is crying Father while you read, which is not a thing a person on probation gets to do.

So tomorrow morning, or tonight, or right now, open it anywhere and read one paragraph as a letter from somebody who already has you.

Declare this over yourself

Say them out loud with your hand on the open page. You are not generating any of this. The authority is Christ's and it is yours because you are in Christ, and an ambassador repeats his King's word rather than writing one. You leave the outcome with Him too. Scripture is the ground under these lines and His Spirit is what carries them.

  1. Red pen I have carried since I was nine, you are not in this book, and there is no margin in it with my score written in. Psalm 119:32 says a man runs the way of the commandments when God enlarges his heart, so the enlarging comes first and the running comes after it. In the name of Jesus I read this page as a son, and the voice on it is a Father's.
  2. Knot under my ribs at the third chapter, you have no authority over a son and you were never the Holy Spirit. His word says I was brought out of Egypt with a mighty hand before I was ever taught one line, and His Spirit is the one crying Father inside me while I read. I am already His while I am still learning it.
  3. Father, You did not hand out a word of the instruction until You had already brought them out, and in Your book the rescue is in the first clause every time. Your word says You sent the Spirit of Your Son into my heart, crying Abba, Father, and it is Your Spirit doing that crying and not me working it up. In the name of Jesus I am leaving this book open on the table, and I am reading it as a letter from home.
