The Mark on the Door Is Not Your Handwriting

In the dark of the house, someone was working at the door.

The boy heard it before he understood it. A soft press, high up. A drag downward. Another press, then a long stroke across the top of the frame, unhurried, the way a man works when he has already decided something and is simply doing it.

He lay on his mat with his eyes open and went back to his list.

He had swept the floor twice, because the second time he was not certain about the first. He had carried the water in. He had eaten the bitter herbs without pulling a face. He had kept his sandals on and his belt tied the way they had been told, and he had not asked out loud why a family eats standing up in a house they have lived in all their lives. He had done all of it, every part, and he lay there in the dark counting it, because he was eleven years old and he had worked out somewhere in the last year that being useful is how you stay.

Something was coming through the streets tonight. Nobody had explained it to him properly, but he had watched the faces of the older ones as they said it, and he had put enough together. Something was passing through. It was going to look at the houses. There was going to be a difference between this house and the house across the lane.

So he had made a list. And the list had a hole in it he could not close, which was that no one had ever told him how long the list had to be.

That is what got him up.

He crossed the room quietly, past the low fire and the smell of roasted meat and smoke, and he came to the doorway meaning to add one more thing to the list, anything, to be safe.

He stopped where he stood.

The frame was already marked. Both sides and across the top, dark and wet, catching what light there was. On the step lay a bunch of hyssop, the leaves crushed flat where a hand had gripped them. A basin beside it. His father sat on the step with his forearms on his knees, looking out at the lane.

The boy stood there with his own hands hanging at his sides, clean.

"When?" he said.

"While you were asleep," his father said.

It went through him all at once. Nobody had woken him to help. He had not been asked. The one thing that would make the difference between this house and every other house had been finished at the door with a branch and a basin while he lay inside assembling reasons to be spared, and his handwriting was nowhere on it.

He sat down on the step next to his father, and neither of them said anything for a long time, and then his father put a hand on the back of his neck, the way you do with a boy who has been carrying something he was never given to carry.

Now hear me, because you are that boy.

You have been lying awake in the dark with the list. You know it by heart. The thing you have to stop. The thing you have to start. The person you have to forgive. The prayer you have not been consistent about since March. You lengthen it when you are frightened and shorten it when you are tired, and the hole in it has never closed, because nobody has ever been able to tell you how long it has to be before you are allowed near God.

And in all that time you have never once gone to the door to look.

Nobody woke you to help

Let me tell you first what I am not going to do, so you can stop bracing.

I am not going to shorten your list. That is the help you are expecting, and it is the same trap in a kinder voice. A shorter list is still a list, and you would be awake tomorrow night auditing the short one.

I am going to take you to the door. What is written on that frame is the whole answer to the thing keeping you awake, and His Spirit will steady you while you look at it.

The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you.Exodus 12:13

Read who is doing the looking. When I see the blood. Not when I see how the household has conducted itself this week. Not when I see the boy's list. The mark was never put there for the family to admire. It was put there for God to read, and He told them in advance, in plain words, exactly what He would be reading.

That is why a family could stand in a doorway in Egypt with sandals on their feet and bread that had not had time to rise, in a country that had held them for four hundred years, and eat.

And the mark came from somewhere. A lamb was chosen on the tenth day and kept in the house until the fourteenth. Four days in a small house with a family. Long enough for the children to know it. Scripture does not dress this up and neither will I: the lamb died, and the household did not, and they walked out of that country free before the sun was properly up.

Fifteen hundred years later a man standing in the Jordan looked up, saw someone walking toward him, and said it out loud in front of everybody.

Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world.

He did not say a lamb. He said the Lamb. Every doorway in Egypt had been a rehearsal, and here came the One they were rehearsing.

For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.1 Corinthians 5:7

Feel the tense of that. Not is being. Not will be, if you. Has been. It is the grammar of something finished while you were asleep. That tense is not my choice of words. It is His, and the same Spirit who moved a man in the Jordan to shout Lamb is the one pressing that finished tense into you now.

Then they buried Him, and the world went quiet for a day, and on the first morning of the week some women walked to the tomb in the half light carrying spices, which is what you carry when you have accepted how the story ends. They found the stone rolled back and the body gone, and two men in dazzling clothes standing there, who asked them the kindest question in Scripture.

Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen.

The stone was not rolled away to let Him out. He was already gone. It was rolled away so that we could look in, and see the linen lying there, and see with our own eyes that the place was empty.

Now the part nobody told you, and it is the whole reason I brought you here.

At the Jordan, before He had preached a sermon or healed a single person, before there was anything anyone could put on a list about Him, the Father said out loud: This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

And at the tomb the Father said it again, louder, and this time He said it by doing something. Paul writes that Jesus was declared the Son of God in power by His resurrection from the dead. The empty tomb is the Father's verdict on His Son, spoken in the only language that could not be argued with. The offering was accepted. The Son was vindicated. Nothing is outstanding.

He was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.Romans 4:25

Read the second half again, slowly. Raised for our justification. The verdict was not passed on Him privately and filed away. It was passed on Him so that it could be spoken over everyone the Lamb was given for.

Which means the list was never what God was reading. You are inside that verdict tonight, not on approval and not under review. Romans 4:25 is where it is written down, and the Spirit who carried that line to Paul is carrying it to your mat.
