Nuala had kept a bulb in the landing window for fifty-one years and she could not have told you why.
Colm put the lamp there the year they married, on the deep sill of the upstairs window that faces the bend, and he never explained it either. He was not a man who explained. He came in one evening with a brass lamp under his arm and put it where it has been ever since, and after he died she went on changing the bulb, and buying the particular bulbs, and going up the stairs at dusk to switch it on.
Her daughter thought it was sad. Her daughter said so once, kindly, at the kitchen table, in the voice people use when they think you are keeping a shrine.
And Nuala half agreed. She was seventy-nine and she had a list she could recite in her sleep, the list of what she had not done. She came back to the farm at twenty-four when her mother got sick and she never went back to the city. She did not train. She did not travel further than the ferry twice. She gave up a job she had loved for eleven months and never once said so out loud to anybody. If you had asked her to describe her life she would have given you the list, because that is the only shape she had ever been given for it: here is what I let go of.
Then, in February, a knock at the front door at half past four in the afternoon, which never happens.
A young man in a fleece with a firm's name on it, standing on the step with his hat in his hand like something out of the last century. Sean. He drove the milk lorry on the back road, he said, six years now, and he wanted to say a thing to her that he had been meaning to say for a while.
That bend is blind, he said. There is no line on it and no light on it, and in the winter the fog sits in that dip like water in a bowl, and every morning for six years he had come up out of that dip and seen her lamp in the window and known exactly where he was. He took his foot off at the lamp. He had done it so many times he did not think about it any more. And last week he had a new lad in the cab with him, learning the route, and he heard himself say it out loud without planning to.
Slow at the lamp, he said. That is what I told him. Slow at the lamp.
Then he asked her, a bit shyly, whether she would mind if he brought her a brighter bulb, because his eyes were not what they were.
Nuala stood in her own hallway after he had gone, holding the door frame.
Fifty-one years she had understood that lamp as a thing about the past. A bit of loyalty. A small stubborn sentiment burning away in an upstairs window on a road nobody used.
It was never about the past at all. It was about the road.

The list of what you left was never the shape of you
Holiness gets handed over as a subtraction, and almost nobody chose that framing either. It arrives as a list: what is no longer watched, no longer said, no longer drunk, no longer gone to. Ask a room full of good people what they are set apart from and the answers come fast. Ask the same room what they were set apart for and watch the pause.
The list is not wicked. It is just not the shape of the thing, and living inside it for years leaves a person exactly where Nuala was, able to name everything they let go of and unable to name a single thing they were placed for.
So look at how it is actually done in the text, because the order there is unmistakable.
Leviticus 8 has Aaron and his sons brought to the door of the tent in front of everybody, and the sequence is deliberate. First they are washed with water. Then they are clothed, and the garments are described at absurd length, because being covered is part of being set apart. Then the anointing oil is poured out over them. And then, at the very end, blood is put on the tip of the right ear, and on the thumb of the right hand, and on the great toe of the right foot.
Stop on those three. The ear, the hand, the foot. Not the mouth to keep it shut. Not the eyes to keep them lowered. Every single one of those three is an organ of doing something. Something to hear with, something to work with, something to walk with. The consecration is aimed at a job.
You are marked on the ear and the hand and the foot rather than fenced off in a cupboard, and that is what set apart has meant from the beginning. Leviticus 8:23 puts the mark on the working parts. The Spirit of God is what makes a ceremony that old land on a Thursday afternoon with your own name inside it.
Notice too where the washing sits in that sequence. At the start. Not as the finish line of a life, but as the first move of a morning that has clothing and oil and an assignment still to come.
And when the prophets describe the same thing from the inside, the doing stays on God's side of the sentence. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you. Then, in Ezekiel 36:27, the line that quietly settles a thousand arguments: I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes. Cause. The walking is caused. It is not the fee you pay to be counted holy.
You have a new heart already and it was installed rather than earned. What is written promises the heart and the Spirit together, and it is His Spirit who does the walking in you, which is why this is good news instead of a heavier version of the same list.
Then Jesus stands on a hillside and says the thing that reframes every ordinary placement anybody has ever resented.
Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.Matthew 5:14-15
Read the verbs. The city is set on the hill. Somebody set it. The candle is lit by somebody else and put on the stand by somebody else, and at no point is the lamp asked to manufacture its own light or to work out what road it is lighting. Its whole job is to be where it was put, burning.
You were placed, and the placing was not an accident of circumstance. Verse 16 has your Father getting the glory for a light you did not make, and the same Spirit who moved the writer of that sentence is the one holding it open in front of you now.
So put the list down. Not because it was wrong, but because it was only ever the back half of the sentence.
You are set apart for something, and the for came first: washed, clothed, anointed, marked on the ear and the hand and the foot, and then sent out onto an ordinary road. Ezekiel 36:26 hands over the new heart as a gift and never as a wage, and nothing here runs on my saying it, because His Spirit is the one at work in the room while you read.
You do not have to identify the road today. Nuala did not know for fifty-one years, and the drivers were slowing the whole time. The lamp was never asked to see the bend. It was asked to be lit, in the window, where it was put.
Declare this over yourself
None of this is yours because you subtracted enough from your life. It belongs to you in Christ, and the placing underneath these words is His doing rather than your usefulness. Say them out loud and leave the outcome with Him, because He answers in His own way and has never once required you to be impressive in order to be placed. Scripture is the ground these lines stand on, and His Spirit is what carries them.
- Years of a list of what I gave up, you are not the point of me and you never were. I was placed here on purpose by the One who lights lamps, and this bend in the road is where the light was wanted.
- Fear that I was set down here by accident, in the name of Jesus you are put out of this house and off this landing. God puts a new heart in and then causes the walking, His word says it in plain words, and my usefulness was never left to my own estimate of it.
- Father, You washed me and clothed me and poured out the oil, and You marked the ear and the hand and the foot for work rather than for keeping still. Your Spirit is the one walking me in it now, and I am opening both hands and taking the assignment that is already mine.
