The CrossingHebrews 10:22

The Water That Never Reached It

This message is for the one thing you have confessed and re-confessed for years, with the sense that no water ever reached it

He went down to the river before the birds, every morning, with one shirt and a bar of gray soap.

There was a flat stone at the edge of the ford, worn smooth on top, and he had knelt on it so many mornings that his knees found the dip in it without looking. He put the shirt in the water. He worked the cuff. He worked the same cuff he had worked the morning before, and the morning before that, since a certain spring four years back.

The mark on it was rust colored and about the size of a thumbprint, and it was set. Anybody in that valley could have told him so. Set means the thing has gone down into the weave and become part of the cloth, and no amount of water lifts it out, because water lifts what is sitting on top, and this was not sitting on top.

He knew that. He went down anyway.

Across the water there was a house with a lamp in the window, his uncle's house, and a boat pulled up on the gravel with the oars still in it. The uncle had been calling him over for four years. He called across in the summer when the river ran low enough to shout over, and in the winter he sent word with anybody going that way. The answer never changed. When the shirt is clean.

One morning in October the man was on his stone with his hands in the cold, and he heard water moving that was not his water.

His uncle was in the river. Up past the thighs, coming across at an angle against the current, in his clothes, an old man with his arms out for balance and his jaw set the way it went when he had decided something in the night.

He came right up to the stone. He said nothing at all about the shirt. He took it out of the man's hands, the whole wet weight of it, and opened his fingers, and it went off downstream turning over slowly in the light.

Then he took the coat off his own shoulders and put it round the man on the stone, and got him up by the elbow, and walked him into the water, and the two of them went across.

They were most of the way over before the man said anything.

"It never came out."

"No," his uncle said. "That was never what the river was for."

The Water That Never Reached It

That was never what the river was for

You have a cuff.

Yours is not on a shirt. It is one thing, one specific thing, and you could say it out loud in four seconds, and you have said it out loud several hundred times. You have confessed it kneeling and driving and lying flat on the floor at two in the morning. You have confessed it in the words you were taught and then in your own words when the taught ones went thin. And every time you get up off the stone with the sense that the water went over it and did not go into it. Nothing in that ache is a verdict written over you, and His Spirit is not the one standing behind it with a stopwatch.

I want to take one thing off you before we go anywhere. That sense is not a sign that something is wrong with you. It is a sign that you have understood exactly what kind of mark it is.

Now open Leviticus, which is the book everybody skips, and notice something about the washings: nearly every one of them has a clock attached. Wash your clothes, bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening. The washing does not end the matter. The evening ends the matter. And tomorrow there is another one.

That is not a design flaw. It was written that way on purpose, and the letter to the Hebrews says out loud what the purpose was: those offerings could never perfect the conscience of the worshipper, and the repetition itself was the reminder. Every year, again. Every washing, again. The system was telling the truth about the depth of the mark for fifteen hundred years, and it never once claimed to reach it.

So hear this before another sentence goes by. You are not failing at a process that works for other people. The word never promised that water would reach the weave, and the same Spirit who kept that promise honest is the one showing it to you right now, so that you will stop trying to finish what was never a finishing.

Because there was a second thing running underneath all of it, and it was never about scrubbing. On the third day of the world God gathered the waters into one place, and a gathering of waters is what a person goes down into. Not a basin you work at. A body of water you enter and come up out of somewhere else.

And the promise, when it finally comes through Ezekiel, is not an instruction. It is something done to a person.

Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.Ezekiel 36:25

I will sprinkle. I will cleanse. Read the verbs and notice whose they are. There is no scrubbing anywhere in that sentence, and the water is not carried down to the river by the one who needs it.

Centuries later a man stood in the Jordan calling a whole country out to the water, and he was clear that he was not the point of it. One is coming after me, he said, and He will immerse you in the Holy Spirit. Those crowds went down into a river and came up and walked in a different direction, and on the day Peter preached in Jerusalem the same two things sat side by side again: turn, and be immersed, and receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.Hebrews 10:22

Hearts sprinkled. Not cuffs worked. Your conscience is the thing that has been aching, and it is the exact thing that verse says has been dealt with. His Spirit did the applying, down in the weave where your hands never reached, which is why you cannot feel where you did it, because you did not.

And now the safe and honest word, and I am going to keep it short because it is not mine to expand. This is not an instruction about water, and nowhere on this page will you find one. If you have already gone down into it, nothing further is being asked of you today. If you have never crossed and you find that you want to, then find someone: a pastor, a believer who loves you, somebody who will walk you through it and be with you. Ask them. That is the whole of what I have to say about that, and it is a welcome and never a term, because what is written puts the cleansing in God's hands and never in yours.

The breakthrough

So get up off the stone.

Not because the mark came out. It did not come out, and I am not going to pretend to you that it did, because you would know I was lying and you would stop listening to everything else. The mark went into the weave. That is what happened, and Scripture is more honest about it than your best friend has ever been.

But hear what the honesty is for. A crossing was made from the other side. Somebody came into the water in His own clothes, took what you were holding out of your hands, put a coat around you, and walked you over, and you are on the far bank right now while you are still arguing about the cuff. This is yours already. It was His Spirit who did the carrying and not your kneeling, which is why there is nothing left for you to finish.

There is nothing to add here. No new discipline, no better confession, no last condition slipped in at the end. The confessing you have done was not wasted; it was honest, and honesty is how a person ends up at a river in the first place. It simply was never the thing that cleansed you. Titus 3:5 says He saved us, not by works of righteousness we had done but according to His mercy, through the washing of rebirth and the renewing of the Holy Spirit.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with the water running over your open hands. You are not washing anything and you are not paying anything down. In Christ this cleansing is yours already, Hebrews 10:22 says your heart has been sprinkled and your body washed with pure water, and His Spirit is the one carrying these words rather than the saying of them. Speak them under His will, and however He answers everything else in your life, the crossing has been made and it was made from the other side.

  1. Mark set in the weave, you are not what my standing rests on. Hebrews 10:22 says my heart has been sprinkled clean and my body washed with pure water, and it was clean water God poured out, not water I carried down to a river. The shirt is going downstream and I am on the far bank.
  2. Voice that calls me unclean at the root, you are evicted in the name of Jesus. What is written is that He sprinkles clean water and takes the stone heart out, and His Spirit did that in me while I was still kneeling on that flat stone arguing about a cuff. I live on this side of the water now.
  3. Father, You came into the river Yourself and took out of my hands the thing I could not get clean, and Your word says it is You who cleanses and never the scrubbing. I am holding my hands open under the water and I am not working at anything. Jesus, thank You that the crossing was Yours to make and You have already made it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
